Lanhydrock is one of the most popular National Trust properties, being the perfect country house and estate, with the feel of a wealthy but unpretentious family home. After a devastating fire in 1881 the Jacobean house was refurbished in high-Victorian style, using the best in country house design and planning, not to mention the latest mod-cons. The house sits in an estate extending to over 1000 acres of parkland and woods as well as attractive formal gardens. Rosemoor in North Devon is one of the Royal Horticultural Society’s principal gardens. Developed by Lady Anne Palmer in the 1960s and 1970s it was gifted to the RHS in 1988. In this very varied garden highlights now include the stream and rock gully, the woodland garden, the fruit and veg garden, the hot garden, the cottage garden and the stone garden. SORRY THIS TRIP IS NOW FULL Coombe Trenchard House and Gardens, Okehampton Coombe Trenchard was designed and built for the Sperlings, wealthy Edwardian friends of Sabine Baring-Gould of nearby Lewtrenchard Manor. The family had lived on site in the old rectory for several years before deciding on a replacement house, to be designed by Walter Sarel of London and built by Dart & Francis of Crediton, in 1906.
